NYC Severe Weather Possible This Afternoon Evening
Good morning everyone. We got the morning rain out of the way very early today, paving the way for an OK day before our cold front arrives late this afternoon. Once again, we’re in an elevated risk for severe weather, but conditions will have to be perfect for them to hold together in full form.
SATELLITE
Blue skies have filled parts of the area, helping to add fuel to the line of thunderstorms as they enter central Pennsylvania. We’ll have a fairly decent day now until storms begin to arrive somewhere between 4-6pm. Highs today will be in the upper 70’s to low 80’s, cooler at the coast.
As far as the storms are concerned, the line is established already and moving quickly. It’ll be a relatively thin line when it gets here compared to what we experienced last week, so don’t expect hours and hours of severe weather, just a quick blast.
Speed = wind, and I think that’ll be the biggest threat with these storms. However, frequent lightning will also be common, and some parts may experience hail as well. Also, this time of year and with the amount of energy available, we cannot rule out an isolated, brief tornado as well. To add to the issues, our ground is still saturated, so localized flooding could be a problem in the notorious spots.
As the day goes on, we’ll be watching the radar closely to see the profile of the storms, the atmosphere ahead of it, and see if these things hold together once they start knocking on our door. As you go east towards Long Island, the risk lessens, but there’s still a risk. With any line of storms approaching your area, treat them with respect and don’t let your guard down because some graphic tells you the risk is lowered. Lightning is still the #1 killer in thunderstorms and there will be plenty of it, severe or not.
REGIONAL RADAR
After today’s action, we sweep out the atmosphere like a giant plow. Deep blue skies will rule the land tomorrow, but we’ll also have a decidedly different day temp and humidity-wise. Hence the reason for big storms today with the sharp difference behind the front. We’ll have a breezy and relatively cool day tomorrow with highs in the upper 60’s to low 70’s.
We dial down the wind for Tuesday, but keep things slightly below average with sunny skies. It’ll feel warmer though without the gusty winds as we enter the low 70’s.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
Some uncertainty remains for mid-week onward with a ridge re-establishing itself in the Southeast. So far, Wednesday is looking like sun and clouds with a chance of a shower at any time and upper 70’s (sun dependent); then a better chance of showers on Thursday, with maybe some peeks of sun, humid, and upper 70’s again.
We may catch a break Friday, then another wave moves in for the weekend. No washouts again, but the risk of showers or showery/thundery weather at some point in every day except Friday.
In the long range, we remain on and off unsettled, and I still do not see any workings of a heat wave in the immediate future.
