NYC SNOW CHANCE REMAINS AFTER POSSIBLE RECORD HIGHS

NYC SNOW CHANCE REMAINS AFTER POSSIBLE RECORD HIGHS – Good afternoon everyone! Everything seems to be on schedule and playing out as forecasted, with a few peeks of sun today bringing us close to 60 and rain showers heading in tonight associated with a warm front. Temps will remain steady tonight as we shift into the warm air of this system. As stated yesterday, how high we go as far as temps go tomorrow all hangs on how much sun we see, but the potential is certainly there for 70-75 degree temps, which may tie or break the record of 73 back in 1972 in Central Park.

This unseasonably warm air is associated with a cold front that will make it’s final approach tomorrow evening. There is talk of severe thunderstorms developing, but whether or not they make it to the immediate coast in severe limits is going to be a tall order with the cooler ocean waters and marine layer. It is certainly possible, but we’ll have to wait and see how strong the line gets, how fast it’s moving, and how narrow the band is. All of these factors will play a role on whether they can make it here or not. We will closely keep an eye on the situation as it develops, but it’s safe to say that we will at least see some gusty thundershowers in the area tomorrow afternoon and they may hit severe limits, especially to our north and our west.

After this system passes, colder air will begin to filter in as an upper level system heads down from Canada and just to our south. This will be a very compact, fast moving low pressure, so it won’t be affecting any large-scale areas; but depending on if it energizes a bit as it hits the coast, it could bring a brief period of light to moderate snow in the NYC area for Friday. As with the severe weather expected Wednesday, we’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out and what this upper level low looks like as it emerges behind Wednesday’s cold front. Check out the latest forecast here for the extended outlook into next weekend.
