NYC Snow Potential Next Week But Issues Remain

Good late morning everyone. Social media and the internet is abuzz over the prospect for snow next week. While there is the potential for a midweek system, there are still many things that need to get worked out, which I will explain below. First, the immediate forecast.

SATELLITE

We have a beautiful day today with sunshine and a few high clouds. We’ll have a light breeze, dry conditions, and highs in the low 50’s.

REGIONAL RADAR

We begin to cloud up tomorrow morning as moisture increases well ahead of a system approaching from our west. We’ll have the chance of some showers late morning into the afternoon tomorrow, but don’t expect any full washouts or flooding. Rain will generally be light to moderate, and it will be on and off in nature. Highs tomorrow in the low to mid 50’s.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

Sunday is looking pretty mild for this time of year, and that’ll be with the help of our system going way to our west and north of the area, taking most of the precip with it. We’ll have the slight chance of a few scattered showers, mostly cloudy skies, and highs near 60.

Monday we begin to clear out and cool off, with highs in the mid to upper 40’s.

ISSUES WITH NEXT WEEK

As excited or concerned as people are, we must remember that the time between now and Wednesday may as well be the time it takes to get to Mars. Why? Because we have 2 systems before next Wednesday, and we’ve seen this play out in the form of disappointment in the past.

Can we get our first measurable snow in the area next week? Of course we can. However, system #1 (Sat – Mon) has to pass first, then system #2 has to form and skip to our south. It all has to happen perfectly in order for system #3 (Wed/Thur) to form and take the path needed to bring measurable snows into our area. Another concern for me is that models showed system #3 as an inland runner, then tight to the coast, and now in the wheelhouse. That could be a sign that it continues to trend further away until it’s light or nothing.

We will watch the models to see if it continues to be a feature on their maps. It’s nice that snow is showing up on the map, and systems are becoming more vigorous. That is a bright side to all of this, even if nothing happens. It means we are trending more into a winter-like pattern.

If everything pans out and our system is still a feature on Monday morning’s run, then we can start talking potential snow amounts, precip type, and/or path.

MANY THANKS TO TROPICAL TIDBITS FOR THE USE OF MAPS
