Final Snow Amounts for the NYC area, possibly a few localized areas seeing +1″
NYC SNOW TRANSITION SOON – Good morning everyone and welcome to a winter wonderland in NYC! The forecast is on schedule and solid, as well as the changeover process which is on our doorstep. So far, most places have seen 2-3″ in the 2-4″ forecast area and 1-2″ in the trace to 2″ forecast area where the changeover has begun. Snow has filled the radar, but warmer air is creeping in from the south, where the rain/snow line is only a few miles south of Long Island. Also, the snow/sleet line is moving is from the southwest from NJ. Look for about another hour of snow for the shores of Queens and Brooklyn, and possibly another 2 hours of snow for the rest of the NYC area, giving us totals in the upper end of the 2-4″ spectrum. It’s possible we may see a few localized amounts of 5″ if there are any areas of heavier convection that pops up just before the changeover. By mid to late morning, everything changes over and begins to melt/get washed away by warmer temps and rain.
Believe or not, temps will rise into the 40’s today as we enter the warm sector of this system. They remain somewhat steady overnight, with fog and drizzle as we wait for the trailing cold front to transit the area tomorrow. Temps will peak in the mid to upper 50’s tomorrow, possibly 60 in some places. Then we get a decent round of some heavy rain as the cold front moves through and temps drop quickly. Be careful late tomorrow night as we may see some black ice when any wet roads could freeze.
NYC SNOW TRANSITION SOON – Satellite depicts very nicely the system in our area. A warm front associated with a low pressure system back by the Chicago area is giving us the snow, with a trailing cold front swinging through tomorrow; giving us warmer temps and heavy rain before things clear out and cool off.
NYC SNOW TRANSITION SOON – Radar is loaded up good with some heavier snow mixed in. Snow changes to rain in a few hours and things begin to melt/wash away.
