NYC SPRING RETURN AFTER SUNDAY WASHOUT

Good morning everyone. The good news, bad news theme continues as we trudge through this slow-moving pattern unfriendly to the most of the Northeast. The good news is, we can see light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a beautiful Monday and Tuesday shaping up. The bad news is that we’re still in this slow moving pattern, so our next system will also take its time moving along. Maybe not as bad as this 10 day deal we’re having, but it might be just enough to raise some questions for Mother’s Day next Sunday. In the meantime, let’s talk about some more gloom.

EASTERN SATELLITE

Things are finally starting to move along, but the main batch of energy from this pile of dreck remains well to our west, so we have some time to go. After a healthy dose of 70’s in spots yesterday, we’re back to maritime influence, cloudy skies, fog, the chance of a shower at any time, and on and off drizzle; highs 55-60 today.

Tomorrow, we bounce back a bit, but keep the clouds socked in. There’s a chance we could see a peek or two of sun, and the sun is strong this time of year. You saw what it did yesterday with a few hours of sunshine, so expect 65-70 degree temps tomorrow; but we could notch past that number a bit depending on how many peeks we get. Look for the same precipitation wise – a chance of a shower at any time, but no washouts.

The washout comes on late Saturday night into Sunday as the main part of this system finally prepares to leave. A wave of low pressure will form along this sloth while everything drifts out, bringing steady rain and cool temps along with with. Expect 1-2 inches total between Saturday night and Sunday; highs in the upper 50’s to low 60’s.

If I were a betting man, keep your plans for Saturday if you can hack the intermittent gloom, but cancel outdoor activities for Sunday.

Now for some good news. Everything is gone by Monday, with sunny skies, dry conditions, and seasonable temps. We’ll have a very comfortable day with highs in the upper 60’s to low 70’s. For Tuesday, we notch up the mildness a little bit more, and 70-75 and sunny skies will be the theme for the day. There’s a slight chance we could go a touch warmer locally, but I’m waiting to see the wind profile first.

The jury is still out on Wednesday as our next system approaches. We could squeeze out another mild and dry one before the clouds and scattered showers more in, but we have to see how fast this next slow moving system is going. Regardless of Wednesday, it looks like we get kicked back into the gloom room for a few days. It won’t be as bad as this past 10 day stretch, but we’ll be in and out of rain and clouds Thursday through possibly Sunday.

The question for Mother’s Day Sunday is, does that system depart Saturday night, or does it leave some time on Sunday. If it pulls out during Sunday, it’s probably a washout like this Sunday. If it’s gone by Saturday late night, then we could have a partial clearing-type situation with increasing sunshine as the day goes on.
