NYC Summer Arrives Today Through Friday

05/21/24 10:42am ET

Good morning everyone. The gears of spring continue to turn as warm to very warm, possibly even hot weather, shifts into the Northeast and all the down into the Southeast. A large dome of high pressure ahead of a developing cold front in the upper Midwest, will treat much of the East Coast to a taste of summer, skipping over spring. Things will return back to reality as we head into the weekend, but for now many spots have a taste of the good life and a break from the gloom.

The same is not the case for the Midwest and Central states, where we’ll be watching that cold front closely for more severe weather this afternoon. As of this morning, we still have very strong storms to contend with in Iowa, along with flooding rains in Nebraska and up into Minnesota & Wisconsin. A large mass of heavy showers and thunderstorms continue to slowly trudge to the east/northeast, bringing with it torrential rain, heavy rumbles, and embedded severe weather. Severe thunderstorm watches remain in effect for much of Iowa.

This is actually not the cold front or our low pressure yet. That energy is hanging back in Wisconsin, South Dakota, and central Nebraska, disguised as lighter rain, some high-elevation snows in Wisconsin, and a few lighter thundershowers. We’re expecting the push to begin this afternoon, with a long dotted line of severe weather stretching from Wisconsin & Minnesota, down into parts of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Eventually by evening, we’ll see that action knocking on the door of Illinois, the U.P. of Michigan, and possibly into Kentucky and Tennessee by late overnight/early in the morning tomorrow.

By tomorrow morning, we could also see a resurgence of severe weather in Oklahoma and northern/northeast Texas as a small wave of low pressure tries to form and ride along the tail end of that front. Overall and throughout the areas mentioned, look for damaging thunderstorms; capable of very large hail, winds in excess of 70 mph, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and tornadoes. Please stay tuned to your local agencies for the latest watches and warnings. Action is expected to develop quickly and move quickly as this front gets going.

Things cool off into the mild realm on Saturday, with sun & clouds and the slight chance of a shower. Highs in the mid to upper 70’s. We remain mild of Sunday, with much of the same and the chance of a scattered shower or two. Monday is the best chance of some showers, but they will remain scattered in nature. We also hold onto the 70’s for a very seasonable weekend overall.
