Summer Skips Over Spring in NYC This Week

Summer Skips Over Spring in NYC This Week

05/20/24 1:20pm ET

Good afternoon everyone. We’re up for some changes this week across the lower 48 in terms of where the warm weather goes (temporarily) and where our severe weather sets up. We’ll move the severe weather away from the Southeast and Gulf States, and shift it into the upper plains ahead of a budding cold front. That cold front will be responsible for some very warm to hot temps in the Mid-Atlantic and parts of the Northeast away from the immediate shore.

We start off fairly quiet throughout the land, but low pressure will enter the upper plains tonight. That will help touch off clusters of severe weather in parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and eventually into Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. I believe the action gets going some time between 8pm and 11pm tonight in extreme southeast Wyoming, western Nebraska, and South Dakota.

As the night going on an into the early morning hours, we’ll see severe weather knocking on Iowa’s door, then into Minnesota and Wisconsin. We’re looking at some very heavy action, with large hail, damaging winds, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and the possibility for some tornadoes. Eventually, this cold front will drape itself across the Ohio River Valley and then into the Northeast; bringing the possibility for some severe weather Wednesday into Thursday.

Here is your local and very warm NYC Metro forecast –

We have a beautiful and seasonable day in NYC today, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid 70’s. Sun returns tomorrow, but we are much warmer for a summer-feel with highs in the low to mid 80’s.

WEATHER RADAR

Humidity starts to increase on Wednesday, but sunshine remains with highs in the 85-90 range. It’ll be cooler at the shore with a light south wind, but areas west of NYC could see temps break 90. That cold front approaches late Thursday, with more 85-90 degree temps and much more humid. Look for a chance of some afternoon storms, and some of those may be strong to severe.
