NYC SYSTEM PARADE CONTINUES WITH SEASONABLE TEMPS

Good morning everyone. After a beautiful day yesterday and a few late evening showers, we have another nice one here in the NYC area today. We’ll have to take it where we can get it as this fast moving pattern continues with no immediate sign of breaking just yet.

We’ll have a sunny day today and believe it or not, we’re almost at our highs with a good jumping-off point in the mid 60’s already. A steady northwesterly breeze will help make things seem cool compared to yesterday, but we’re still going for upper 60’s to near 70 today in most spots.

After a mostly sunny start tomorrow, clouds will increase, lower, and thicken as the day wears on. We’ll also have the slight chance of a few light showers by mid to late afternoon; highs in the low to mid 60’s. Late night tomorrow and around sunrise Friday, there will be a shot at some steadier rain, but the main batch of rain holds off for another 12-18 hours.

For Friday, our frontal system begins to inch closer, with a possible wave developing and moving NNE along the front. I’m not seeing anything severe for our area, but we could see rain, heavy at times, with embedded rumbles of thunder; especially late afternoon and into the overnight hours. It’s a little early and no flood watches have been posted, but we may need them for localized issues in poor drainage areas. Highs Friday again in the low to mid 60’s.

So far, your weekend is looking like a split decision; with clearing skies Saturday and breezy/seasonably cool conditions and highs in the low to mid 60’s. Unfortunately clouds increase again for Sunday as our next system approaches.

As of now, it looks as if most of the energy slides to our north and we have the slight chance of some showers mid afternoon. We won’t have a washout on our hands, but it’s not going to be a fantastic Sunday either. Highs continuing in that low to mid 60 range.

In the long range, I was hoping that Sunday’s system and high pressure behind it would be vigorous enough to clean house for a while give the jet stream a big enough kick to alter the pattern somewhat. While that low is going to be fairly vigorous, it’s too compact and high pressure behind it is not a blockbuster either.

Basically, we continue onward with this active and fast moving pattern; with systems transiting the area every 3-4 days. I also warned about getting too excited with models depicting mid 90’s in the Washington  D.C. area and mid to upper 80’s up here. Looking at everything, I think we remain in close proximity to these fronts, which equals no big heat.

If things work out with any given system, we could get A very warm day if we find ourselves on the right of a front, but I think the maritime air sourced from Nova Scotia is still powerful enough to push back quickly (very normal this time of year).

Heat will continue to build in the Southeast and Midwest, which will eventually equate into a big “spring breakout” for us. Temperatures so far this spring have been almost dead-on average, minus a cooler and warmer day here and there. We’re slowly warming up the oceans, ground, and air in typical NYC/Long Island fashion. It may not feel warm to you with the in and out gloom, but the trees and grass will tell you a different story. Take a look around and you’ll see that we are FAR ahead compared to last year at this time; when trees were still bare and grass was still brown.

We’re doing good and I’m happy so far with the way things are unfolding. Remember, the rain helps. It helps make everything green and also helps keep the pollen down on surfaces instead of airborne. A breezy, warm April/early May, would equate to people suffering allergy-wise.
