NYC Three Day Gloom Before Mild Air Returns Briefly
Good morning everyone. We have the remnants of Hurricane Ian still sticking around as it has essentially reinvented itself as a weak, cut-off, Nor’easter-esque low pressure system that’ll meander around till Wednesday. Things will improve and we have some beautiful weather Thursday and Friday, then we get back to more typical October temps as we move forward. The good news is that we are not done with the mild weather, but our systems will be moving fairly fast after this week. This will equate into a balance of mild days and crisp days.

We’ll keep things simple since the gloom is here through Wednesday. An onshore flow will dominate, with gusty conditions throughout this period. Highs will be in the upper 50’s to low 60’s, and we’ll have showery conditions or the chance of showers each day. We don’t expect any damaging winds or massive flooding, but tidal departures may cause minor coastal flooding in the notoriously flood prone areas. Again, think Nor’easter, but at least we have the moon on our side.
Things will clear out Thursday as milder air moves in and the rest of Ian’s remnants pull away. We’ll have increasing sunshine and highs in the 70-75 range. We’re looking for a repeat on Friday, but that’ll hang on the timing of our next front. As of now, we will go with the same, with a slight increase in the humidity and increasing clouds late.
That front will pass with a whimper, but much cooler air heads in. Expect a breezy and sunny day on Saturday with highs in the upper 50’s to near 60, then low 60’s Sunday under diminishing winds and more sunshine.
In the long range, our next system will try and bring milder air back into the picture, but we have to see if the warm front can make it. At minimum, mid 60’s will return, but if that warm front can get past NYC and into inland parts of New England, we could see another brief return of 70’s before we get knocked back into the 50’s and low 60’s mid-month.
