Tropical Storm Ian Aims For South Carolina NYC Remnants Expected Saturday

Good afternoon everyone. Today is a solemn day after learning about the extent of destruction in Southwest Florida, as well as the hundreds, if not thousands of people unaccounted for in immediate coastal areas. The show must go on though, and there is more forecasting to do in regards to Tropical Storm Ian, which s poised to regain hurricane strength and make landfall somewhere on the South Carolina coast. After that, it looks as if Ian will head inland, then curve out to the northeast to give NYC a rainy and blustery day Saturday.

Things are calm in the NYC area, although the cloud shield is starting to creep in. You’ll notice the veil of thin clouds, and those will lower and thicken tomorrow as the day goes on. We’ll see mid to upper 60’s tomorrow, then the raw conditions move in for Saturday with mid to upper 50’s at best.

We will get some rain out of this, and winds may gust up to 30-35mph. There won’t be much action otherwise as it’ll feel like your typical November coastal-system rain, albeit sourced from the tropics. Expect scattered showers and clouds for Sunday with near 60 temps, then we begin to clear out on Monday.

WEATHER RADAR

For South Carolina and the rest of the Southeast, we will be watching to see if Ian can regain Hurricane status. Hurricane warnings line the South Carolina coast, as are Storm Surge Warnings. While we do not expect the same catastrophic surge here as seen in the Ft. Myers metro area, please treat this second landfall with respect. A 3-5ft storm surge can still cause property damage and create dangerous situations that can increase the chance of accidental drownings, being trapped on 1st FL level homes, and/or being swept away on foot or in a vehicle.

Anyone who lives in an area that is sea level or a few feet above sea level in proximity with the bay or ocean, need to evacuate and plan accordingly to protect property and life.

We will also have issues with flash flooding and severe weather, including numerous brief tornados that come with no warning due to their fast-strike nature. Be careful of low lying areas that are prone to flooding, downed power lines, and fast moving water.
