NYC WEEKEND DISCUSSION
NYC WEEKEND DISCUSSION – Good morning everyone and welcome to winter! Before we get into this important forecast for the weekend, I’ll give you a brief synopsis on what to expect in the next 72 hours, which will be a factor in the system approaching the area in a few days. Today will be slightly warmer than expected as the arctic push has slowed down a fraction, paving the way for sunny skies, windy conditions, and highs in the mid to upper 40’s. It’ll feel much colder due to the wind, but the real cold air begins to actually arrive tonight, with lows in the lower 20’s , very windy, and a slight chance of some scattered flurries. Tomorrow will be late January-like, with windy conditions and highs only in the mid 20’s. Flurries may fill the sky from time to time tomorrow, with a slight chance of some steadier light snow if we find ourselves on the northern fringe of some energy slipping to the south of us, but expect little if any accumulation. Low’s Thursday night will be in the low teens, with single digits possible in outer lying areas.
NYC WEEKEND DISCUSSION – On Friday, we hit rock bottom in terms of this cold airmass, with sunny skies into the evening, and temps only reaching the low to mid 20’s. This will play a role as a warm front begins to approach the area ahead of a broad low pressure system. Temps will remain steady and clouds will increase Friday night; with a slight chance of snow after midnight, but becoming more likely a few hours before sunrise. Due to the stubborn cold air meeting a strong warm front, I believe the intensity of the precip will be somewhat enhanced, giving us a chance at some moderate to heavy snow for a short period, especially right before mixing with sleet, then changing to rain Saturday late morning. Because of the below freezing temps at the start of the snow, it will stick on the majority of surfaces, giving us a base for snow to continue to accumulate as temps rise into the 30’s before changing to rain.
For this reason, I have the amounts slightly higher than most weather forecasts out there. I hate snow and I don’t veer away from the norm because I am an optimist, this is just my gut feeling on this one. That being said, it all gets washed away by Saturday afternoon as snow changes to heavy rain at times, and temps climbing into the mid to upper 40’s. The threat of rain continues on Sunday as the cold front arrives, with temps in the mid 50’s. Don’t be surprised if we have a few rumbles of thunder on Sunday, with mid 30’s moving in again behind the front for Monday.
NYC WEEKEND DISCUSSION – Cold air moving in across the Great Lakes and into our area. The next big player as far as precip moves into the west coast and into the upper Rockies.
Radar is quiet in most aspects aside from some Lake Effect snow just south of Buffalo.
