NYC Wide Range Temperatures Today Plus Cool Start For May

Good morning everyone. We have a beautiful day today in store for the entire area, but not everyone is going to see summertime temperatures. We’re very early into the season and with a rough spring so far temp-wise, the ocean is cooler than average. This will impact the shorelines and eastern Long Island until we get more consistent warmth in the area. Meanwhile, we gradually slide towards the cool side to start May, but we bounce back quickly for a nice, spring feel.

Finally, we’re able to snap the losing streak in terms of it being warmer on a single day in March than all of April. Our 82 degree day on March 26th in Central Park is about to fall to mid 80’s, maybe even upper 80’s if the wind profile cooperates. However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows for the entire area, maybe just sunshine. Cool ocean temps will hold south facing shores of the City and Long Island in the 70’s, with maybe even some 60’s for parts of Long Island. The north shores will be affected much less, with some 80 degree readings likely up there in Nassau and Suffolk. Overall, we’ll have a very wide range of temps, with the warmest readings mostly likely in parts of Manhattan, downtown Brooklyn, central Queens, and areas of dead air like LGA airport and Astoria. During the peak heating hours, you’ll see 60’s through 80’s throughout the Metro Area depending on where you are.

Clouds roll in overnight as our front begins to drape across the area. We’ll have the chance of some scattered showers overnight and tomorrow, but no rainouts. Cloudy skies and our proximity to the front, will help drop things into the low to mid 70’s tomorrow. Overnight tomorrow and into early Thursday, some strong to severe storms are possible upstate, especially in Western NY and the Finger Lakes region. The lines will be narrow and brief, but gusty winds and small hail are possible.

Winds pickup on Friday as we begin to clear out, and we drop into the 65-70 realm for most of the area. Winds will pick up for a blustery day, with wind gusts to near 40 mph possible. Overnight Friday, temps will drop into the mid 40’s, with some 30’s possible away from the City. Winds will help keep the frost at bay, but areas upstate where the wind dies down, may see some scattered frost.

Your weekend is looking gorgeous, but Saturday is looking seasonably cool for your start to May. Expect sunshine both days, with low to mid 60’s Saturday, then we bounce back into the low 70’s Sunday for a more seasonably mild feel.
