POSSIBLE SNOW NYC EARLY MONDAY

POSSIBLE SNOW NYC EARLY MONDAY – Good morning everyone! Today will be the first of a few days in terms of a taste of winter, as cold air moves in from Canada, and we keep an eye on an interesting yet complex system for late Sunday into Monday. In the immediate forecast, expect a cold, breezy day today, with the sun not helping much, highs in the upper 30’s, lows in the mid to upper 20’s at night. More or less the same for Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the upper 30’s, lows Saturday night in the mid 20’s, lows in the low 30’s Sunday night. Things get a little complicated for Sunday night, read below.

POSSIBLE SNOW NYC EARLY MONDAY – There are a few discrepancies as far as models are concerned. I will discuss the GFS as it has been the most reliable of the unreliable models as of late. On Sunday evening, a system will approach the area, bringing precip of some form into the NYC area. Several variables show a weaker system slightly further south as the GFS shows a much stronger system slightly further north and west. A weaker system would give us a fairly decent period of frozen precip before turning into rain mid Monday morning, as it would have a harder time overwhelming the cold air locked in. Whereas a stronger system like the GFS is predicting as of now would have an easier time pushing the cold air out, giving us a much shorter period of frozen precip and more of a mix upon the onset and overnight, before turning to all rain on Monday morning.

The map I made above this afternoon in my opinion is a worst case scenario, especially on the higher end of the spectrum in each area. Confidence is low at this point and we have to wait and see how strong and where exactly the system sets up. Cold air will not be an issue, but strength and location will be the driving force in what we see if anything at all. Either way, prepare for Monday morning’s commute, set your a alarms a little earlier, and give yourself some extra in case you wake up in the morning for a rude surprise.
