Quiet 5 Days in NYC, Tropics Heat Up

06/06/24 11:31am ET

Good morning everyone. As expected a large cluster of heavy storms transited the Tri-State area, including the NYC Metro area and Long Island with some heavy rain and rumbles. That action has pushed well-off to the east now, and is exiting out into the Atlantic via Cape Cod.

We still have a cold front out to the west, and that’ll help touch off some widely scattered showers and storms for the Northeast this afternoon. No organized severe weather is expected at this time, but we could see a few isolated spots where storms may reach severe limits with the heating of the day.

Speaking of severe weather, the Midwest and South catch a huge break today with nothing of any consequence expected. Things change a little bit tomorrow as a new batch of energy comes out of the upper plains and into Nebraska tomorrow late afternoon/evening and overnight. That will be the precursor for a severe weather outbreak overnight tomorrow into Saturday morning across Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa. Look for very large hail, damaging winds, frequent lighting, and more tornadic activity with these storms.

We’re also keeping an eye on the Tropics in the upper Caribbean and Gulf as a front that’lthrough the East Coast on Monday/Tuesday, stalls out near Florida. This front, along with a possible tropical wave developing near Cuba, may combine to give Florida and/or the Gulf some headaches. As of this morning, models depict this action slightly further to east, impacting the Florida Keys and most of Florida. We can’t say for sure exactly what we’re dealing with yet, but if that energy is available and gets away from the high elevations of Cuba, we could be looking at further development into a tropical depression or tropical storm.

For now, it’s safe to say that Florida could be in for some much needed rain, but it could be in the “too much at once” category; even if our tropical moisture doesn’t develop further into an organized storm. We will continue to watch this as the days goes on. The timeline remains midweek next week into that weekend in terms of development and impact.
