Quiet NYC Heavy Thunderstorms for Pennsylvania
04/14/24 10:39am ET
Good morning everyone. We’re off to a good start here in the NYC area, but one last spoke of energy running around that Canadian low pressure, is sparking off a cluster of rain and rumbles in upstate New York and parts of Pennsylvania.
The tail-end of that same disturbance, will run into milder and destabilized air this afternoon and evening. We are expecting a thin line of severe storms to form from west to east on the New York and Pennsylvania border; then move almost in a north to south direction though eastern Ohio and western/central Pennsylvania.
This line is expected to produce some large hail, frequent lightning, damaging winds, and the potential for tornadoes. The timeline of the severe weather potential looks to be some time between late afternoon and midnight tonight.
Meanwhile, we continue to watch our West Coast system begin to make its trek across the Rockies. After generating more heavy rain and heavy snow, our system will fall apart, then reorganize just east of the Rockies. By doing so, it’ll create cluster of severe weather starting some time tomorrow evening in areas such as southwest South Dakota, parts of Nebraska, Kansas, and maybe even down to Oklahoma.
The action will start off scattered, then become more organized, forming larger complexes and lines of severe weather. This process will begin late overnight tomorrow and into early Tuesday morning in the same areas; adding parts of northeast Texas and possibly Iowa into the mix. By Tuesday afternoon, Iowa, Missouri, parts of North Dakota, and Arkansas will be into the fray.
Look for large hail with some of these individual cells, as well as damaging winds, frequent lightning, and isolate strong tornados. Not that any tornado isn’t a problem, but the potential for EF3 tornadoes and above is a distinct possibility. Stay tuned and we will continue to hone in on the timing and location of the severe weather.
