SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NYC METRO AREA – Good afternoon everyone. As promised for the last 10 days or so, a severe line of storms is forming in our backyard, from the mid-Atlantic states all the way up through central PA and western NY.
Storms continue to slowly march east while individual cells quickly move NNE. For this reason, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been placed in effect for the NYC metro area. So far, some of these storms have been producing large hail, winds in excess of 60mph, isolated tornadoes, and flooding rains. There have been reports of wind damage in central PA, but we do not know yet if that damage was at the hands or tornadoes, micro bursts, or straight-line winds.
With a very strong sea breeze going on along the immediate coast, I remain skeptical as far as what this means for the Long Island area. However, the NYC area has a good chance at seeing some storms reaching severe limits. Nassau County, specifically western and northern Nassau, is also at risk. As we get out towards Suffolk and the immediate shore, the risk lessens, but we will still see at least some strong storms/heavy rain.
Stay tuned as we wait and see if the intensity of these storms can hold once it encounters the marine air. Either way, torrential downpours, gusty winds, and small hail are on the menu for the entire area, coast or not.
