Thunderstorms March East Ahead of Cold Front

Thunderstorms March East Ahead of Cold Front

02/28/24 9:10am ET

Good morning everyone. We’re watching a line of severe thunderstorms march east and southeast ahead of a powerful cold front that’ll bring a cold day to the Great Lake Sates, Northeast, and New England tomorrow. Low pressure is racing northeast into Canada, giving enough lift and shear to warrant tornado watches in parts of Kentucky, West Virginia, and north central Tennessee.

Storms will continue to head east southeast, eventually weakening as it nears the marine layer at the coastal plain. However, until that moment happens, we will be watching storms capable of large hail, frequent lightning, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes. Next up will be western areas of North Carolina, Virginia, south central areas of Pennsylvania, and possibly into Maryland.

As our line of storms enter the majority of the Northeast, it’ll convert essentially into a gust front with heavy showers and maybe a few rumbles of thunder. The best chance for any severe weather holding together, would be north central PA and the Finger Lakes area of NY.

Stay tuned and keep an eye on local bulletins if you are in any of these areas. Here is your local NYC Metro Forecast –

Locally, look for on and off gusty showers for NYC and Long Island. Winds could gust between 45-55 mph, especially at the immediate coast along south facing shores. That heavier line of showers and embedded storms should be knocking on our door by evening-time. Highs in the near 60/low 60 range.

WEATHER RADAR

We clear out tomorrow, but we go cold and remain windy. Highs will only be in the mid to upper 30’s, with winds gusting 35-40mph for a blustery day. Things relax Friday with more sunshine and lighter winds. Look for highs 45-50 as temps modify.

Our weekend isn’t looking too great, but at least we’re not cold. We’ll have lowering and thickening clouds on Saturday with some on and off showers. Highs in the low 50’s. Some AM showers may be left on Sunday, with some late clearing and a mild day in the 55-60 range depending on the sunshine factor.
