Vigorous System Brings Wintry Finish to NYC

Good morning everyone. Clouds are here and scattered showers are moving in and out of the area. The bulk of the rain and even some thunderstorms, is to our southwest and heading our way. For NYC, this will remain a race to the finish between cold air and moisture to see how much snow and mixed precip we get; but for the Catskills and Poconos, the changeover will be faster, hence more snow to our N&W.

Spotty light to moderate to heavy rain showers will become steady and heavy at times. We’ll watch for colder air to move in some time by late morning/early afternoon, changing the rain to a wintry mix. Any mix should change to all snow between 1 and 3pm, then we’ll play the game to see what’s left in this storm’s lungs precip-wise. Temps will be cold enough to help snow stick as we’re in the 20’s a couple of hours before sunset, but it has to fall fast enough/has to wait for surfaces to freeze due to the wet roads.

For the NYC area, look for a coating to 2″ possible, especially on colder surfaces such as cars, treen branches, and grass. Long Island should see a coating to 1″, same rules apply. Areas north and west of NYC, specifically areas of the Catskills and Poconos, could see up to 6″/6-12″ depending on your location and where the rain changes to snow the fastest.

Wind will also be a concern as we could see gusts to near 50mph along the immediate shore, 35-45mph elsewhere. Flash-freezing will also be an issue overnight, so stay off the roads, even in the NYC/Long Island area with lows hovering in the low 20’s tonight.

WEATHER RADAR

Things relax tomorrow and sunshine returns, but we will be cold and blustery with highs in the upper 30’s. Milder air returns on Monday, and we start that early spring-like/typical Mid-March pattern this week as expected.
