WARM FRONT TRANSITING AREA NOW SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE MONDAY – Good afternoon everyone! We have a busy day today as we take a look at multiple weather-related stories for the NYC area. As we speak, a warm front is transiting the area, touching off a small batch of heavy rain and rumbles of thunder. Areas of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens and into Long Island will experience some torrential downpours, thunder, and lightning. Nothing severe is expected, but we could see some brief, localized flooding in poor drainage areas. If we can squeeze out a little bit of sun after this round of thundershowers, we could get close to 80 degrees for highs today.

For tomorrow, heat and humidity increase noticeably. We’ll have patchy fog in the morning, then some sun and clouds, highs in the mid 80’s. We could also have that combination of juicy air and sun working the atmosphere, touch off a few showers and thunderstorms, but they will be widely scattered in nature.

Severe Weather Possible Monday

On Monday, a sharp cold front will enter the area and enhanced by an upper level low swooping down from the Great Lakes region. With warm, humid air ahead of it, seasonable temps and dry air behind it, and extra lift provided by low pressure, we are looking at the possibility of a line of widespread strong to severe thunderstorms. Timing of the front is key, especially for the coastal areas in regards to severe weather. With a late approach, any storms have a greater possibility of losing strength at the immediate coast since upper level lows need that sunlight for energy, especially with the maritime influence still in play. However, areas such as Staten Island, Bronx, Manhattan, parts of Brooklyn, and Queens North, do have a decent shot at seeing some severe thunderstorms.

Also, for our outside listeners, NW New Jersey and NE Pennsylvania have an elevated shot at seeing severe weather. Look for development starting around noon, and we will keep a close eye on this as it unfolds. Any storms that do pop up, will have the possibility of damaging, straight-line winds, isolated tornadoes, hail, frequent lightning, and torrential rain. Once any line forms, we will also get a better idea of what the coastal areas should expect. We will also be warm and humid, with highs in the low to mid 80’s in most areas, slightly cooler at the coast.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, that upper level energy behind the front is slow to clear out, so we would see the chance of a few nuisance type isolated showers or storms, highs in the low to mid 80’s both days.  It’ll be somewhat dry both days, giving a challenge for anything to form, but we could still see the atmosphere wring a few storms out with the help of the sun. Any activity should die off each day after sunset.

Thursday looks to be the most comfortable day, with sunny skies and highs in the low 80’s, then heat and humidity return for Friday. As of now, we’re looking at mid 80’s for Friday and humid, then hot and humid next Saturday through Monday, highs in the mid to upper 80’s Saturday and Sunday, maybe a few 90’s on Monday. We could see another round of severe weather on Monday or Tuesday depending on the timing of another strong cold front.
