WATCHING SNOW POTENTIAL WHILE NYC COLD CONTINUES
WATCHING SNOW POTENTIAL WHILE NYC COLD CONTINUES – Good morning everyone, I hope all of you are enjoying this weekend! Seasonably cold air continues as we watch 3 systems making their way towards the New York City area. The first two are reinforcing shots of cold air. Yesterday, I discussed Wednesday’s system for the potential of light snow and/or rain. However, there is another system ahead of it, which will transit the area tomorrow afternoon. This one looked dry while Wednesday’s looked more energized, but this morning, tomorrow’s looks slightly stronger while Wednesday’s looks drier. The reason is simple, the atmosphere doesn’t have room for both since they’re so close together and are clipper-type systems. So basically, if tomorrow’s is weak, Wednesday’s will be slightly stronger; and tomorrow’s is stronger, Wednesday will be rather weak.

I actually discussed this system in a previous forecast several days ago, as well as stated any reinforcing shot of cold air has the potential to bring flurries into the area. This seems to be the case, however it could rise to the level of cheap thrill. Tomorrow and Wednesday’s systems are both very quick movers, so anything that does fall will be very light, if anything at all; a dusting to 3/4 of an inch at best. So we will watch tomorrow’s clipper to see what it does. This will dictate how Wednesday goes as well, but there is a much larger system that I’ve been watching for several days now in regards to Super Bowl Sunday and into Monday.

Late Super Bowl Sunday, a more important system has the potential to bring significant snow into the Northeast Corridor. A low pressure system will gather up Gulf moisture and head out of the Mississippi Valley and into the mid-atlantic. As of now, it’s too early to say what the final scenario will be, but the potential is there for the low to transfer energy to the coast for a Nor’easter type situation, or continue on for a more over-running type situation. Either way, there is the potential for some measurable snow in or near the NYC area, so we have to keep a very close eye on it.
You can check out my previous forecast in which I discuss temperatures and sky conditions for the week here – https://www.nycweathernow.com/quiet-nyc-start-activity-resumes-midweek/ and if you have time, check out the earlier forecasts where these systems appeared on my radar to see how things evolve.
Satellite shows cold air pumping into the area. If you look carefully, you can see the slightly brighter white clouds near Kentucky, our clipper system for tomorrow afternoon.
Aside from some lake effect snow and some scattered flurries, all is quiet in the NYC area.
