Widespread Flooding Likely for Tri-State Area

Widespread Flooding Likely for Tri-State Area

Good morning everyone. We jump out of the fryer and into the frying pan with no rest for the weary in forecasting. We say goodbye to our storm that cleared New England late last night, and hello to an even more powerful low pressure system heading our way. This one has no questions as far as whether it’ll be rain or snow for the Northeast, but it’s going to be an important one regardless with a wide array of features with it.

Blizzard warnings are up as expected across areas of the central Midwest, and winter storm warnings extend into the upper Midwest and western Great Lakes states. We’re expecting a wide area of 6-12″+ snowfalls in a southwest to northeast line, but that only covers the cold sector of this vigorous low pressure system.

In the warm sector, we’re expecting that close and deep contrast in air masses to spark off a fierce line of severe weather marching through the Gulf States, then into the Southeast before cells try and make the trip into the Mid-Atlantic. We’re expecting damaging straight-line winds, large hail, frequent lightning, torrential downpours, and the possibility of widespread tornado action from west to east tomorrow and into the late evening.

As far as the Northeast is concerned, we’re expecting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and winds gusting to 50mph in spots, possibly approaching 60mph along the immediate shore. There are widespread flooding concerns due to over-saturation of the ground regardless of whether you have snowpack or not. The timeline for the heavy rain, wind, and rumbles looks to be tomorrow night, then tapering off Wednesday AM.

Your local forecast is below –

SATELLITE

storm free

We have sunshine today for a pleasant day. Look for seasonably cool temps and highs in the low to mid 40’s.

WEATHER RADAR

Clouds increase tomorrow with the chance of a few scattered showers by mid to late afternoon. Wind and rain intensity will increase overnight, with the chance of some thunderstorms as well. Highs will be in the 50’s, so there’s no issue with snow or mixing, but we will be watching the flooding situation closely for overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. Wind gusts may reach 45-50mph (possibly higher if some stronger storms survive the trip), and near 60mph along the immediate shore.

Look for AM wind and rain on Wednesday, then clearing late. Highs near 50 will happen early, then temps drop before sunset.

Thursday looks pleasant with highs 45-50, sunshine, and light winds; then we begin to watch another heavy rainmaker approaching Friday. We’ll have increasing clouds Friday after some AM sun, then rain, heavy at times overnight. We’ll also have to watch for flooding again.
