Winter Weather Advisories Issued For Manhattan North and Westward

Good morning everyone. Our cold blast has arrived to help set us up for some now tomorrow. Winter weather advisories have been posted in regards, and so far geographical Long Island (Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk) has been spared. After we get everything out of here, below average temps settle back in, and remind us that we are entering late January.

SATELLITE

Early this morning, gusty winds continue as we start our day in the low to mid 20’s. We won’t recover much, but winds will settle down into a more sustained NW Flow of 10-20mph. Expect highs near 30, and wind chills in the teens. Clouds increase late overnight with our next system approaching, and lows will be in the upper teens, with mid teens possible N&W of NYC.

REGIONAL RADAR

For tomorrow, we are in the phase in which we watch the radar to see what it does. NWS has snow starting earlier in the day, but I tend to disagree. I am sticking with a late morning to early afternoon start for our snow. We’ll also have to wait and see how that radar fills in and how intense the precip is. These are all factors now in terms of where we wind up on the spectrum of yesterday’s snowfall discussion.

As far as accumulations are concerned, my trace – 2″ for NYC/Long Island and 2-4″ N&W of NYC remain viable in my eyes. With Manhattan and the Bronx under the Weather Advisory which forecasts a blanket 2-4″ by NWS, I’m leaning that the boroughs included in the advisory wind up on the lower end of that spectrum.

For Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk, areas near the shore will probably wind up on the lower end of that trace – 2″ spectrum, and most of the accumulations will occur on colder surfaces. (cars, tree limbs, grass, wood decks, etc).

Again, watching the radar is the most important issue at this point. We have enough cold air to get this period of snow, but if the radar is spotty, look for lower amounts. Plus, we go to rain anyway. Tomorrow’s highs in the mid 30’s, then mid 30’s overnight with a cold rain, will probably wash away anything that falls; especially Long Island.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

Colder air pushes back in Sunday with highs temps in the mid 30’s occurring early. The wind machine turns back on, and we’ll drop into the low to mid 20’s overnight Sunday. For Martin Luther King Day, expect highs near 30 and lows in the upper teens to near 20; then a repeat Tuesday and Wednesday before we slowly modify Thursday as our next system marches slowly towards us.

In contrast to what some social media outlets are saying, our system next weekend will not be a snowstorm for our area. We will have shades of our previous pattern as this goes west and north of us; bringing milder air in for next Friday and Saturday, with upper 40’s/50’s and rain. Colder air will settle back in after that, but I still don’t see any major snowstorms on the immediate horizon, even with the pattern change.
